Howie Steed was born in mid-Wales in 1957. After spending his early childhood overseas, he was educated in Swansea, and the area has been his home for most of the time since. Although he studied sciences, painting was a long-standing and self-taught interest that he took up professionally in 1983.

Steed paints landscape and marine scenery in a refined, almost photographic style. He works with various combinations of acrylic, oil, and alkyd paints, employing subdued, natural colour mixes, and a broad range of carefully controlled tone. He also takes a characteristically precise approach to both perspective and form. Steed gives, in particular, a uniquely realistic interpretation of the way the sea moves, and interacts with light. The resulting pictures are tremendously evocative and reminiscent of the places they represent.

The subjects of Howie Steed's wider work are many and various, but it was for his marine painting - and in particular his depictions of the coast of the Gower Peninsula - that his artwork first became popular. Steed's work is represented in many private and corporate collections.
